This is one of the most common misconceptions I see in the UAE — and one of the riskier ones.
Many business owners assume that "know your customer" and anti-money-laundering rules are a banking matter. So they never check whether the rules apply to them. Often, they do.
A range of non-financial businesses in the UAE carry KYC and AML obligations, including certain dealers, advisors, and service providers whose activity falls under the scope of Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions. If your business touches high-value transactions, real estate, precious metals, or acts as a corporate service provider, this is worth checking early rather than after a regulator asks.
A proper KYC framework isn't a one-off form. It's an ongoing obligation: identifying who you're dealing with, understanding the source of funds where relevant, keeping records, and knowing when a transaction pattern needs to be flagged rather than processed.
